FIVE SENSES
We've got five senses designed for us to take in the world around us. All the good and bad in the world, we all take it in through each of these five senses. What if we were to target ways to use our senses to make more good and less bad? That's the goal this week! We can focus on the world around us with each of our senses, and find ways to make it better.

LOOK FOR THE HELPERS
Fred "Mister" Rogers said he would get scared as a child when something bad was happening in the world. Then his mom would tell him, "Look for the helpers." And that would bring peace to a scary situation because he could find the good happening in the midst of evil. The truth is, we can't focus on stopping the bad actions in the world. It only serves as a distraction to focus on what you can't change. We can, however, contribute to changing the world into a better place; we can choose to do good. We can be the helpers. The world can be a more beautiful place if we look for -- and choose to be -- the helpers.

You know what's great about the golden rule? Beyond being the best advice of all time, it's got instructions built inside to make it easier. We all naturally want people to notice us, cut us a break, appreciate us... the list goes on. And there's no need to lay out the whole list because it's the same for all of us! The golden rule is a test with the answers built into our hearts and minds. All we have to do to figure out how to help others, is to think of what we'd like for ourselves. Or if you'd prefer, look below for this week's simple helps!

FOLLOW YOUR HEART
It's good advice to follow your heart. It's even better advice when we know that we weren't meant to wall off our heart to avoid ever sharing it with those around us. Hearts aren't meant to be focused on themselves. This is true of our physiological heart supplying life to the rest of our body. It is true also of the metaphorical heart that we're meant to follow. Life, both physical and metaphorical, becomes abundant when our hearts give effortlessly where it's needed. This week let's have a heart for those around us. And then, let's follow our hearts.

GRATITUDE AND SMILING
Did you know smiling elevates your mood? Scientifically and verifiably, choosing to smile changes neurotransmitters in your brain and makes your mood a little better. Gratitude is a lot like that. Choosing to be grateful isn't just a gift to those around you, it's a gift to yourself. It can feel forced at first, just like a smile can, but it opens the door to changes without and within. This week, let's go help somebody with acts of gratitude!

SURPRISES
Every surprise has one thing in common: the recipient can't control it. Surprises are 100% decided by the giver. Sometimes the giver is bad luck, like a flat tire. Sometimes the giver is an unkind person, like the guy who puts a dent in a parked car and drives off. In any event, we can't decide the surprises we get, but we can decide on the ones we give. This week, our simple helps are dedicated to surprising others in ways that add joy to the world.

STICKS AND STONES
...may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. A counterpoint to this famous saying is the fact that, growing up, everyone learns the words to it. Maybe we "doth protest too much" with a whole saying about how words can't hurt. They often can. But there's good news in that. It means our words matter. We can change people's day and even change their life with our words. This week, our simple helps are about being encouraging and respectful on purpose. We all know people who've seen their share of sticks and stones, let's use our words to heal them.

THANKLESS WORK
Thankless work is even tougher than hard work. We've got an "appreciation meter" deep-set in our hearts and minds. And it's impossibly difficult to feel motivated for long when that meter is running at zero. But there's a secret way to hotwire the appreciation meter, and gain way more bandwidth in the process. Telling others you appreciate them! We work better together, and thankless work can be made into thankful work by... anyone, including us. This week, our simple helps focus on making everyone's work more fulfilling by being thankful for it.

REVOLUTIONS AND RESOLUTIONS
Our Earth made it all the way around the sun again! That's a great reason to resolve that this year will be better. How much of that is luck? A little of it, sure. But most of it is what we decide to make of this year. If we can resolve to make our own lives better (starting a diet, going to the gym, reading new books...), then we can resolve to make the lives of others better too! And bonus, we can resolve to help others in 5 minutes or less! That's way less time than it takes to go to the gym. Let's go help somebody this week and commence the best year ever.

NOW WHAT?
Last week may have been a flurry of continuous activities and celebrations, or it may have been quieter than previous years. Either way, the holiday season ends this week, creating a feeling of "now what?" 2021 is almost here. It's an opportunity to move on from the frustrations (or maybe even build on the progress) of 2020. The answer to "now what?" is ours to provide. We can't know what's coming next, but we can know how we will face it. Let's head into the New Year choosing to help each other.

SPECIAL TIMES
Tomorrow night, Monday, December 21, Jupiter and Saturn will be touching each other in the night sky for the first time in almost 800 years. The last time it happened, Genghis Khan was at the height of his power and the people of England were implementing the Magna Carta. Special times are made special because they're so rare. And although it may sound sentimental, it's a fact that there's no time as special as the times we have with people we love. They only come once, and each one is more precious than the rarest moments that happen in the night sky. Let's love each other this week. Merry Christmas.

HOLIDAYS
In the final stretch of the year, it's easy to get so busy that it's hard to stop and remember why we're busy. It's because we're making plans and buying gifts for people we love. It's the extra effort to make time for friends and family, and to make that time special. Reconnecting in simple ways (like this week's simple helps!) is a good way to pause and appreciate the holidays. One of the best ways to avoid letting these moments slip by is by making them more special for those around us.

ON BEING CHEERY
If they gave awards to each month, December would get the title of "Cheeriest Month." And that's good news for our goal of making the world a better place. It's easier when we're cheery. But no one (with the possible exception of Santa Claus) is cheery all the time. There are moments of car trouble, people cutting in line, and needing a nap we can't have. Those are moments of opportunity. We can be good solely as opportunists, or good in all moments, even when it's hard to be. This week, our simple helps revolve around being good on purpose, to create cheer where none would otherwise be found.

END OF AN ERROR
We're entering into the last month of 2020. It was a year with so many oddities that it sometimes felt like living through a historical error. It wasn't only error, though. There were bright spots of love and kindness. At times, 2020 felt like long and unbroken periods of discouragement. But times like these make every act of simple help shine that much brighter. This year may have had some errors, but we're balancing the ledger every time we choose to help. So let's go help somebody this week!

THANKSGIVING
Thanksgiving is an old-timey word that became the name of a holiday. Unless you have buckles on your shoes and hat, it's unlikely that "thanksgiving" is a word you'd use to describe a state of mind. But that's what it is! A thankful heart makes it easier to serve people. Gratitude creates a desire to bless others. Let's celebrate Thanksgiving (both the holiday and the state of mind) by making life better for the people around us.
