RAIN OR SHINE
Plants are inspiring. It's raining? Plants are having a good time. Sunshine today? Plants are happy. We tend to wait on the sunshine times of life to be grateful. It's in our nature. Why are plants different? They've got roots that are ready and waiting for the rain. When we see people going through the storms of life, it's a good time to make sure they're rooted with friends and family. We can be those roots for people who are having tough times and feel like they're getting carried away by them. When we're all putting down roots together, it makes enjoying the sunshine even better.

Social Media
Is social media a good thing or a bad thing? It depends on the people who use it and the words and the kindness they share. Tools that connect hundreds of millions of people can magnify the effects of our social connections in a powerful way. This week, our simple helps are focused on using those tools for good! We can use social media to help people without being face-to-face with them. We can be the people that make social media a good thing.

Abraham Lincoln once said, "I don't like that man. I must get to know him better." He knew a secret that can help us all. Feelings follow our actions. It would be nice if we felt love for those around us at all times. But that's not reality; life is full of stress and emotional triggers beyond our choosing. How should we deal with that? If we can be as wise as Abe Lincoln, then we'll choose to reach out rather than close off. Help people this week in personal ways. You'll find you like them and the world around you much better.

Lao Tzu said something two and a half millennia ago that remains equally true today: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Whether it's a geographic destination or a personal goal, the whole journey is ...big. It's too big to think about all at once. That's a major contributor to the stress we all face every day. How can we get it all done when it sometimes feels hard just to put one foot in front of the other? That's where our wise, ancient friend solved the riddle. It's that first step that changes everything. In fact, that first step is the only way anything can change at all. Anyone can take a single step, and this week we can do it, too. Each of our Simple Helps this week is the first step towards making the world a better place.

Do, or do not, there is no try...
Master Yoda spoke those words to Luke Skywalker in a Dagobah swamp; it was a long time ago in a galaxy far away, but the words still hold true. We often focus on the action these words encourage -- the "do" -- but there's a second part to the phrase we overlook. Sometimes avoiding an action, or an error, or a mistake is just as valuable. "Do not" is oftentimes the wisest course to take. This week's simple helps all focus on ways to "do not" and make the world around us a better place.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME...
Each day comes with opportunities to create memories. And we (usually) get a choice on how good those memories are. When was the last time you had a moment you look back on fondly? It's almost certainly a moment you shared with someone else: a kind exchange with a stranger, a choice to give time to a friend instead of being too busy, or maybe just some encouraging words. For those moments and all the other good ones, "when was the last time?" is a question that brings joy with the memory. For those same moments, "when is the next time?" is a question that offers hope for the future. "When is the next time?" is the question that can change lives, and it's the question we can answer this week. We can create fond memories with simple help this week.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
When we see a star athlete performing at the top of their game, we can think "they make it look easy." And they do. But it takes years and years, and thousands of hours, to make it look easy. And that practice benefits the future goal, even though it doesn't benefit anyone too much while it's happening. Helping people gets more effortless with practice too! We can start to make it look easy when we get enough practice in. One huge difference: the practice we put in now benefits the people around us. Whether we are practicing kindness or have become champions of kindness, the world is better for it.

Our lives are so full of distractions that it starts to feel normal. It feels so normal that we even look for distractions when nothing is calling for our attention. It can start to feel unnatural to just be ...present. Being present in the moment with someone else means we're choosing to be there; we're choosing presence over the distractions with which we've grown comfortable. This week, our simple helps are focused on choosing to be present with people, rather than letting those moments get stolen by distractions. Life and relationships are more fun when they get our full attention.

"First, do no harm" is a rule that doctors try to live by. But if it was the only rule, they wouldn't help people very much. Doctors can avoid injury with inaction, but they can only help with action. When we help people this week, let's choose to go beyond inactive goodness. If we just avoid harming people, that's a fine start. Yet, it's being actively good that changes lives. So let's first do no harm... but we don't need to stop there. We can do so much more with our action than with our inaction. Let's actively make the world a better place.

PANDORA'S BOX
Remember Pandora? Before it meant streaming music, she was a girl with a box from the Greek god, Zeus. According to legend, she opened the box and the evils of the world escaped. War, sickness, famine... all out of the box with no way to undo it. But one thing was left. Hope. Great legends stick around because they carry a timeless message. In this case, the message is one that we get to carry. It's a message of hope. We can't "undo" the evil in the world, but we can do good that overcomes it. Pandora's box is open, and the world needs messengers of hope like you to give the story a happy ending.

PLANS
Plans are fun to make. It's all exciting promise and possibility when we're planning. Executing the plan is different. That requires work. It doesn't have to lose the excitement, though. Even though there's more work involved in our action than in our planning, it's far more gratifying to experience. Planning to do good things is a dreamy kind of excitement, but it's not very fulfilling. Doing the work, actually helping people, that's the kind of gratifying excitement that no plan could ever match.

HALF FULL
You know the old saying. Pessimists see the glass half empty, optimists see it half full. That's true as far as it goes, but it assumes a static situation. One that we can't do anything about. Yet, most of the time, that's not how life works. Our days are so full of interactions with each other. And people (unlike glasses) are either getting fuller or emptier in any giving situation. This week, let's not just see the glass half full; let's try to help make sure we are adding to other people's lives. Even the most dogged pessimist may see a glass full when you've undeniably added help to a life that needed it.

WISDOM OF THE YEARS
What is it that people of the older generations have that we're missing? The wisdom of experience. There's a saying that the master has failed more times than the student has ever tried. A lot of the wisdom passed down to us from the generations before us is based on living and learning lessons we've never experienced. This week, we can choose intentional kindness based on some wise old sayings. To do it, each Simple Help is based on one of those wise old sayings! Let's help people this week by borrowing some wisdom from the past.

THIS WEEK IS GOING TO BE GREAT!
We can decide more about this week than this week can decide for us. While we can't control everything that happens, we can decide how life looks this week. We can decide to be hopeful instead of pessimistic. We can be kind to those who aren't kind to us. We can be givers instead of takers. It may not always be easy, but it’s definitely simple. It's a simple choice to decide to make this week as good as it possibly can be for you and those around you. As for making it easy? That's why we're all reading this together. It's a whole lot easier and better doing life together than going it alone!
